Last week on the Ask a Matchmaker podcast, I had the pleasure of hosting Janine Rogan, a woman on a mission. As an author, CPA, and founder of the Wealth Building Academy, Janine is dedicated to empowering women to grow their wealth confidently through financial feminism, aiming for financial equality for all.
Understanding the Pink Tax
In her new book, The Pink Tax, Janine breaks down the barriers women face when it comes to building wealth. One of her most startling revelations is how much more women are forced to pay for everyday items—ranging from razors to personal care products—simply because they’re marketed towards women. This phenomenon, often referred to as the “pink tax,” is a glaring example of the wealth gap in action.
What is the Pink Tax?
Janine explains the implications of the pink tax:
“When you look at the wealth gap between men and women, it starts with the wage gap. Women are paid less for the same jobs. Then, on top of that, we’re hit with a pricing disparity. Women’s products are often more expensive than men’s, so we’re left making less, spending more, and having less to put away.”
The pink tax is not just an inconvenience; it compounds the challenges women face in achieving financial independence.
The Broader Impacts of Financial Disparity
What’s even more concerning? Societal structures such as unpaid maternity leave and insufficient financial support for caretakers only serve to widen this gap. The wealth distribution becomes even more imbalanced for women of color, who hold just 2% of the world’s wealth. This statistic illustrates the intersectionality of financial feminism and highlights how various factors contribute to the financial struggles of many women.
Busting Myths Around Women’s Spending Habits
One of Janine’s primary goals is to debunk the myths surrounding women’s spending habits. Contrary to popular belief, the financial challenges women face are not due to frivolous spending on lattes or avocado toast. Instead, Janine is passionate about providing practical financial advice that empowers women to demand meaningful economic change.
She emphasizes the importance of awareness and education, enabling women to make informed financial decisions. By understanding the systems that perpetuate financial inequality, women can advocate for themselves and seek solutions that promote fairness.

Post of the Week: A Fun Idea for Canada!
Speaking of money and cultural representation, Janine and I brainstormed an idea for Canada! Instead of featuring royalty in promotional materials, why not showcase famous Canadians like Ryan Reynolds, Celine Dion, and Keanu Reeves? These celebrities embody the spirit of Canada and can represent the country in a more relatable and exciting way.
