Should you give your current partner deserve the benefit of the doubt?

Does the  old adage “once a cheater, always a cheater” still hold water? Specifically in the context where your current partner cheated on their ex – a relationship that happened before you.  If this information became available to you, do you think you would be able to continue to trust your significant other or does their past behavior overall dictate their current character?
