Hi there,

It’s Maria Avgitidis, your resident matchmaker, coming to you this week from sunny Mexico! ☀️🍹 Yes, you read that right—I traded the chill of November for the warm breeze and vibrant energy of the Annual Matchmakers Alliance conference. This event holds a special place in my heart because I co-founded it 12 years ago with Michelle Jacoby and Laurie Berzack. What started as a small gathering has now grown into a powerhouse community of 105 dating professionals, all coming together to share, learn, and elevate the matchmaking industry.

This week’s episode of Ask a Matchmaker is a special one. Alongside my colleague and fellow matchmaker, Louie Felix, we took a moment between speaker sessions and poolside chats to dive into the fascinating (and sometimes fiery!) intersection of politics and dating. And of course, we tackled your hotline questions with our signature blend of honesty and heart.

So, grab your headphones and let me take you behind the scenes of this unforgettable week.

Building Bridges at the Matchmakers Alliance Conference

When I first dreamed of creating the Matchmakers Alliance conference, I envisioned a space where matchmakers could connect, collaborate, and support each other. This year’s gathering is proof that dream has become a reality.

Over the course of three days, we’ve been immersed in panels, workshops, and open discussions, all designed to help us grow as professionals and better serve you—our clients. And let’s be honest, the sunshine and margaritas don’t hurt either! But what makes this conference truly magical is the camaraderie. Seeing so many passionate people come together with a shared goal of fostering love and connection is beyond inspiring.

One of my favorite moments so far? Sitting down with Louie to record this week’s podcast.

How Politics Became a Dating Dealbreaker

Let’s talk politics. (I know, I know—but stay with me!)

Since 2016, political differences have emerged as one of the biggest dealbreakers in dating. It wasn’t always this way. Louie and I reflected on the dating landscape before that pivotal election year, when political affiliation was more of a background detail than a defining factor. But now? For many singles, it’s front and center.

We’ve all seen it: dating profiles that boldly declare “swipe left if you voted for [insert party or candidate here].” For some, political alignment is shorthand for shared values. But here’s the catch—voting for the same candidate doesn’t always mean you see the world the same way.

During our discussion, Louie shared a touching story about his conservative father. Over time, through open conversations and exposure to different perspectives, his dad’s heart and mind softened in ways Louie never imagined. It was a beautiful reminder that people are more than their political labels, and sometimes, love and patience can bridge even the widest divides.

Should Politics Define Your Dating Pool?

One question we tackled on the hotline was whether it’s okay to exclusively date people from your political party. My answer? It depends.

Dating someone with different political views can certainly come with challenges, especially in today’s polarized climate. But it’s also an opportunity to grow and see the world through a new lens. The key is to dig deeper. Do their core values align with yours? Are they respectful of your beliefs, even if they don’t share them?

Ultimately, it’s about knowing what works for you. If differing political views are a dealbreaker, that’s valid. Just make sure you’re not shutting yourself off from someone who might surprise you with their kindness, empathy, and shared goals.

The Separation Question: To Date or Not to Date?

Another hot topic from this week’s hotline: is it wise to date someone who’s separated but still in the process of divorce?

This is a tricky one. On the one hand, separation can be a time of self-discovery and growth, and some people are genuinely ready to move forward. On the other hand, unresolved emotions or logistical hurdles can complicate things.

My advice? Proceed with caution. Ask yourself (and them): Are they emotionally available? Have they truly moved on from their marriage? And most importantly, are they ready to build something new with you? If the answers are unclear, it might be worth holding off until their divorce is finalized.
