Dear Reader,
I’ve been eagerly planning this Ask a Matchmaker episode for weeks, and I’m excited to finally share it with you!
Caregiving is a topic close to my heart. I speak about it frequently on the podcast and my Instagram because it doesn’t receive enough attention in our society.
Before caring for my mother, I had no idea how expensive care facilities were, how much time and energy it would take to manage medications and medical appointments, or how all-consuming the physical, emotional, and financial toll of being a caregiver would be.
Even though over 50 million adults in the US are caring for a loved one, many people are left to navigate this journey without the guidance and support they need to be there for their family and live a happy, healthy life themselves.
Katie Brandt, a caregiving advocate, reached out to me to discuss her personal and professional experience with caregiving as well as her insights on dating and finding community as a caregiver.
Katie’s husband Mike was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) at the age of 29, about a year after their son was born. Meanwhile, her father was experiencing the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. When her mother passed away from a heart attack around the same time, Katie found herself taking care of two adult men with progressive neurological disorders.
Fast forward a couple of years, and she knew she wanted to use her skillset to help other people. When it was time for her to go back into the workforce, she made it her mission to help caregivers, particularly women, learn how to not just survive but thrive!
Of course, part of thriving and navigating life as your own person includes finding a tribe and maybe even a romantic partner. In this episode, Katie and I talk online dating, how to attract the right person, and when to bring up your caregiving responsibilities to your date. 💘
This was such a special conversation. Tune into the full podcast to learn more about Katie’s incredible story of love, loss, and resilience, as well as tangible resources and tips for caregivers everywhere.
