Ask a Matchmaker podcast!

In this episode, we talk about prenups (should you get one?), postnups, money parties, and how to budget as a couple.
Finances can be a tough topic in relationships, but Ashley has tools to make the subject easier to approach. In those initial money conversations with a partner, she recommends asking three important questions:
- “What is your first money memory?”
- “What was your family like growing up with money?”
- “What is your biggest fear?”
Hearing our partners’ answers can help us understand their relationship with money and where it stems from. If they grew up in a more financially constrained home, they may cling a little more tightly to their savings. If they associate spending with emotional fulfillment, they may be more of a spender.
Ashley explains that in each relationship, there is usually one saver and one spender. That’s why it’s so crucial to get on the same page. She does this with her husband by having “money parties” each month. Together, they get in their PJs, play their “money party” playlist, drink tea, and review their budget.
Your money party can look different, but she recommends incorporating something fun and enjoyable so you start to associate budgeting with a positive experience!
